Let \(1\to K\to G\to Q\to 1\) be a short exact sequence of finitely generated groups with \(K\) non-elementary word hyperbolic and \(G\) hyperbolic. \textit{L. Mosher}, [in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 110, No. 3, 305-314 (1996; Zbl 0851.20037)], showed that in this case \(Q\) is hyperbolic by constructing a quasi-isometric section \(s\colon Q\to G\). \textit{M. Mitra}, [in Topology 37, No. 3, 527-538 (1998; Zbl 0907.20038)], proved the existence of a Cannon-Thurston map for the embedding of the Cayley graph, \(\Gamma_K\), of \(K\) into the Cayley graph, \(\Gamma_G\), of \(G\). This paper generalizes these results. In particular, the author shows the existence of a quasi-isometric section \(s\colon Q\to G\) in the case that \(K\) is strongly hyperbolic relative to a non-trivial proper subgroup \(K_1\) such that for each \(g\in G\) there is a \(k_g\in K\) for which \(gK_1g^{-1}=k_gK_1k_g^{-1}\). Also, if \(1\to(K,K_1)\to(G,N_G(K_1))\to(Q,Q_1)\to 1\) is a short exact sequence of pairs of finitely generated groups with \(K_1\) as above. If \(G\) is strongly hyperbolic relative to \(N_G(K_1)\) and weakly hyperbolic relative to the subgroup \(K_1\), then there is a Cannon-Thurston map for the embedding \(i\colon\Gamma_K\to\Gamma_G\).
