This article is a continuation and extension of the work of the second author [Electron.\ J.\ Differ.\ Equ.\ 2007, Paper No.\ 71 (2007; Zbl 1156.47024)]. In that paper, the theory of generalized eigenfunction expansions for a \(C^*\)-algebra of commuting normal operators was developed. The theory constructs certain ``generalized eigenprojections'' in terms of which operator expansions are obtained. The present paper studies generalized eigenfunction expansions of multiplicity one and the authors obtain precise convergence estimates. The theory is applied to the expansion for the Laplacian and Hecke operators on the fundamental domain of the modular group, where the convergence estimates are optimal.
