Let \((M, g)\) be a conformally compact Riemannian manifold; that is, \(M\) is the interior of a compact manifold with boundary, \(\overline{M}\), with boundary defining function \(\rho\), and \(g\) is such that \(\overline{g} = \rho^2 g\) is a smooth incomplete metric on \(\overline{M}\). Let \([g]\) be the conformal class of the compactified metric and \([\rho^2 g|_ { \partial M}]\) the conformal infinity determined by \(g\). The main result of the present paper (Theorem 1.3) is that, if \((M^{n+1},g)\), \(n \geq 2\), is a complete \(C^3\) conformally compact manifold with conformal infinity \((S^n, [\gamma_0])\), where \([\gamma_0]\) is the conformal class of the round metric and assuming that \(\text{Ric}(g) \geq -ng\) and \(| R +n(n +1) | = o(\rho^2)\) (where \(R\) is the scalar curvature of \((M^{n+1},g)\) and \(\rho\) is a defining function of the boundary), then \((M^{n+1},g)\) is isometric to the Poincaré metric on the ball \(B^{n+1}\).
