The authors study Laguerre unitary ensemble by several methods. The aim is to show that the distribution function for the first eigenvalue spacing and the generating function of a certain discontinuous linear statistic of this ensemble can be expressed in terms of a solution of the fifth Painlevťranscendent. The relation to the theory of orthogonal polynomials, in particular, the techniques of the isomonodromy deformations and ladder operators are used. These two techniques are compared and generalized.
