In the interesting paper under review, the authors consider a complete connected noncompact Riemannian manifold \(M\) with Ricci curvature bounded from below and positive injectivity radius. Setting \(\mathcal L\) for the Laplace-Beltrami operator acting on \(M\) and \(\mathcal D\) for the operator~\(\sqrt{{\mathcal L}-b}\), where \(b\) denotes the bottom of the spectrum of \(\mathcal L,\) it is assumed that the kernel associated to the heat semigroup generated by \(\mathcal L\) satisfies a mild decay condition at infinity. The main result asserts that if \(m\) is a bounded, even holomorphic function in a suitable strip of the complex plane which satisfies Mihlin--Hörmander type conditions of appropriate order at infinity, then the operator \(m(\mathcal D)\) extends to an operator of weak type \(1.\) This extends partially a celebrated result of \textit{J.~Cheeger, M.~Gromov} and \textit{M.~Taylor} [J. Differ. Geom. 17, 15--53 (1982; Zbl 0493.53035)], who proved similar results under much stronger curvature assumptions on \(M,\) but without imposing any assumption on the decay of the heat kernel.
