Let \(H^2\) be the Hardy-Hilbert space over the bidisk and let \(T_z\), \(T_w\) be the multiplication operators induced by the independent variables. A closed subspace \(M\subseteq H^2\) is said to be mixed invariant if \(T_z(M)\subseteq M\) and \(T_{w}^{*}(M)\subseteq M\). If \(M_1\) and \(M_2\) are mixed invariant subspaces of \(H^2\), then let \(V_{z}^{(i)}\) be the restriction of \(T_z\) to \(M_i\) \((i=1,2)\) and let \(V_{w}^{(i)}=P_{M_i}T_{w}|_{M_i}\), where \(P_{M_i}\) is the orthogonal projection onto \(M_i\) \((i=1,2)\). One of the main results of the paper says that, for a unitary map \(T:M_1 \to M_2\), the following conditions are equivalent: (i) \(TV_{z}^{(1)}=V_{z}^{(2)}T\) and \(TV_{w}^{(1)*}=V_{w}^{(2)*}T\); (ii) \(TV_{z}^{(1)}=V_{z}^{(2)}T\) and \(TV_{w}^{(1)}=V_{w}^{(2)}T\); (iii) there is a unimodular function \(\psi(z)\) such that \(Th(z,w)=\psi(z)h(z,w)\) for every \(h\in M_1\). Some other interesting results related to mixed invariant subspaces are proved as well.
