This paper is concerned with an \(hp\)-version a posteriori error analysis for the time discretization of parabolic problems. Both continuous and discrete Galerkin time-stepping methods are investigated. The approach is based on an appropriate reconstruction of the discrete Galerkin solution which allows the variational formulation to be rewritten in strong form and subsequently enables the application of natural energy arguments. The resulting error estimators are reliable and efficient, and all the constants are given fully explicitly in terms of step sizes, the local polynomial degrees as well as on the continuity and coercivity constants of the spatial operator.
