This paper is motivated by work of \textit{A. Connes} [Sel. Math., New Ser. 5, No.1, 29--106 (1999; Zbl 0945.11015)], who gave a spectral interpretation of the zeros of the zeta-function. The paper explores these ideas further, and shows how a variant of Connes' formula is essentially equivalent to Weil's version of the classical ``explicit fomula''. In the expliict formula a sum over zeros is related to a sum over primes. The paper shows how the sum over zeros may be rewritten as a trace, or more precisely, as the limit of the traces of a sequence of operators. There is related work due to \textit{R. Meyer} [Duke Math. J. 127, No. 3, 519--595 (2005; Zbl 1079.11044)], who works with Schwartz spaces which are not Hilbert spaces.
