Given \(z\in {\mathbb D}\), the unit open disc in the complex plane, and \(\lambda_j, x_j\in [-1,1]\) with \(|x_j\pm \lambda_j|\leq 1\) for \(j=1,2\), let \(S_z\) be the line segment \([x_1+\lambda_1 z, x_2 + \lambda_2 z]\subset {\mathbb D}\). Also, let \([S_z]=(x_2+\lambda_2 z)-(x_1+\lambda_1 z)\in {\mathbb D}\). The author considers integral operators \(I\), acting on analytic functions \(f\) on \(\mathbb D\), of the form \[ I(f)(z)={{1}\over{[S_z]}}\int_{S_z} {{f(\zeta)}\over {A(\zeta) z+ B(\zeta)}} d\zeta \] where \(A\) and \(B\) are linear complex functions with real coefficients such that \([A(\zeta) z+ B(\zeta)]^{-1}\) is bounded on \(S_z\) for each \(z\in \mathbb D\). This type of integral operators contains as special cases various well-known integral operators such as the Cesáro operator and its adjoint, the Hilbert integral operator, an \(H^2\)-analogue of the Carleman integral operator on \(L^2(0,\infty)\), and some others. The main results of this paper are, under certain coefficient conditions on \(A\) and \(B\), norm estimates for the operator \(I\) either on the Hardy space \(H^p\) with \(p>1\) or the Bergman space \(A^p\) with \(p>2\). The norms are given by certain integrals involving coefficients of \(A\) and \(B\). Although the required coefficient conditions are rather unnaturally complicated, these codtions are satisfied by all the operators mentioned above as special cases. So, the aforementioned result provides a unified way of estimating norms of various well-known integral operators. Also, such norm estimates are shown to be sharp in some special cases, but not in general. The author raises the problem to find suitable coefficients conditions that will result in sharp norm estimates.
