According to the semi-conjugacy theorem of \textit{G.\,Valiron} [Bull.\ Sci.\ Math., II.\ Ser.\ 55, 105--128 (1931; Zbl 0001.28101)], if \(\varphi\) is a hyperbolic holomorphic self-mapping of the unit disk with dilatation coefficient \(1/\lambda\) at the Denjoy-Wolff point, then there exists a nonconstant holomorphic mapping~\(\sigma\) from the disk to the right-hand half-plane such that \(\sigma\circ\varphi= \lambda \sigma\). Recently \textit{F.\,Bracci, G.\,Gentili} and \textit{P.\,Poggi-Corradini} [Rev.\ Mat.\ Iberoam.\ 26, No.\,1, 57--76 (2010; Zbl 1198.32006)] showed that Valiron's method can be carried over to hyperbolic holomorphic self-mappings of the unit ball under some special hypotheses on the mapping. The author now provides a different special hypothesis under which Valiron's result generalizes to higher dimensions: namely, that the hyperbolic holomorphic self-mapping of the ball belongs to the Schur class; under this hypothesis, it turns out that the conjugating mapping too belongs to the Schur class. The author's main application states that, if \(\psi\)~is a hyperbolic holomorphic Schur-class self-mapping of the unit ball with dilatation coefficient~\(\alpha\), then the composition operator defined by~\(\psi\) on the Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on the ball with reproducing kernel \((1-\langle z,w\rangle)^{-\beta}\), where \(\beta\)~is a positive integer, has spectral radius equal to \(\alpha^{-\beta/2}\). Moreover, every complex number of modulus between \(\alpha^{\beta/2}\) and \(\alpha^{-\beta/2}\) is an eigenvalue of the composition operator having infinite multiplicity.
