The main result of the paper is the following Theorem. Let \(X\) be a connected reduced complex space and let \(Y\) be a compact projective analytic subset of \(X\) of pure dimension \(q> 0\). Then there exists a neighborhood \(\Omega\) of \(Y\) in \(X\) and a discrete subset \(G\) of \(\mathbb{R}\) such that, for any connected covering space \(\pi:\widehat X\to X\) in which \(\widehat Y:= \pi^{-1}(Y)\) has no noncompact connected components with only compact irreducible components, there exists a weakly \(q\)-convex exhaustion functions \(\varphi\) of class \(C^\infty\) on \(\widehat\Omega:= \pi^{-1}(\Omega)\) which is strongly \(q\)-convex on \(\widehat\Omega\setminus\varphi^{-1}(G)\). This statement generalizes the previous result of the first author [Math. Z. 254, No. 3, 553--566 (2006; Zbl 1106.32014)], where \(X\) was supposed to be smooth and conditin on \(\widehat Y\) was not to have compact irreducible components.
