The celebrated Kaplansky conjecture asks when Jordan homomorphisms (that is, additive maps which commute with the operation of taking squares) are the only unital invertibility preserving maps on a ring with \(1\). Though much activity has been devoted to this problem, the original question at the time of review remains far from being resolved. The present paper collects some of the key partial results which are directly connected to the initial problem. Several avenues of further investigation are outlined at the end. (The last one was already addressed by the reviewer in [Czech.\ Math.\ J.\ 56, No.\,3, 919--921 (2006; Zbl 1164.46337)] and extended by \textit{A.\,Bourhim} and \textit{V.\,G.\thinspace Miller} [Stud.\ Math.\ 188, No.\,1, 67--75 (2008; Zbl 1145.47005)].)
