The Pontryagin-Hill theorem asserts that an abelian group is free if it is the union of a countable ascending chain of free pure subgroups. Motivated by this result the author seeks criteria ensuring that the union of an ascending chain of projective modules is projective. In particular he proves that a module over a Prüfer domain with a countable number of maximal ideals is projective if it is the union of a countable ascending chain of projective pure submodules.
