The paper under review is devoted to answer the following question: If we take a dense sampling of a smooth function and compute the limit function with respect to our subdivision scheme, how well does this limit function approximate the initial function in relation to the sample density? The answer for a large class of nonlinear subdivision schemes is given showing the connection between the stability of the subdivision operator and the approximation order properties. Under certain natural hypothesis, the stability of the nonlinear subdivision scheme implies the approximation order. Among the results, a conjecture stated by \textit{G. Xie} and \textit{T. P.-Y. Yu} [Approximation order equivalence properties of manifold-valued data subdivision schemes (preprint)] is affirmatively solved under a stability assumption on the subdivision scheme. Especially interesting is the application of the deduced methods to the adaptation of a linear subdivision scheme to operate on nonlinear (manifold-valued) data. An example when the manifold is a Lie group is shown in detail using the exponential mapping of a Riemann metric on the Lie group.
