Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(0\), \(\xi\in k\), \(p_1\), \(\ldots\), \(p_{d-1}\in k[T]\). The author studies the Thue equation \(X(X-p_1Y)\ldots(X-p_{d-1}Y)+Y^d=\xi\) over \(k[T]\), called an equation of the splitting type. It is shown that if \(0<\deg p_1<\cdots<\deg p_{d-2}\) and \(\deg p_{d-1}>C(d) p_{d-2}\) for some explicit constant \(C(d)\) depending on \(d\), then this Thue equation only has the trivial solutions \(\zeta(1,0)\), \(\zeta(0,1)\), \(\zeta(p_1,1)\), \(\ldots\), \(\zeta(p_{d-1},1)\) for some \(\zeta\in k\) with \(\zeta^d=\xi\). So the author solves a function field version of \textit{E. Thomas}' conjecture [``Solutions to certain families of Thue equations,'' J. Number Theory 43, No.3, 319--369 (1993; Zbl 0774.11013)].
