Let \(X\) be a perfect, compact plane set, and let \(D^{(1)}(X)\) be the normed algebra of all continuously differentiable, complex-valued functions on \(X\). The authors concentrate on the problem of giving necessary and sufficient conditions on \(X\) for \((D^{(1)}(X),\parallel\cdot\parallel)\) to be complete. For example, they show that for polynomially convex, geodesically bounded, compact plane sets \(X\), the algebra \((D^{(1)}(X),\parallel\cdot\parallel)\) is complete if and only if the following condition holds: for each \(z\in X\), there exists \(B_z>0\) such that, for all polynomials \(p\) and all \(w\in X\), we have \[ |p(z)-p(w)|\leq B_z|p'|_X|z-w|. \] They conjecture that for each connected, compact plane set \(X\) with more than one point, \((D^{(1)}(X),\parallel\cdot\parallel)\) is complete if and only if \(X\) is pointwise regular and prove this in some cases.
