The asymptotic behaviour near extinction of positive solutions of the fast diffusion equation is studied for a critical value of the exponent. After a suitable rescaling one obtains a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. The main result of the paper says that the convergence rate for the rescaled equation is polynomial in time which is in contrast with the previously known exponential rate for all other values of the exponent.
