    The authors consider spacelike 2-surfaces in (time-orientable) spacetimes. In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 (2), 021101 (2009)], they defined and studied the quasilocal energy, via some canonical embedding of the surface into the 4-dimensional Minkowski space, an observer and a canonical gauge; a quasilocal mass and a quasilocal energy-momentum 4-vector field were derived. In this paper, the authors prove that, for a family of such surfaces going to spatial infinity, the limit of the quasilocal mass coincides with the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass. In particular, the result is exemplified in the case of some coordinate spheres of the Schwarzschild spacetime.
