This paper is concerned with periodic points of a class of algebraic dynamical systems, given by iterated morphisms of projective varieties. There are two main results. First, the proof of a conjecture by \textit{P. Morton} and \textit{J. H. Silverman} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 461, 81--122 (1995; Zbl 0813.11059)]. Second, a study of degrees and multiplicities of periodic points, with applications to the existence of periodic points of arbitrarily large period.
