For regular initial data, rates of decay of the energy functional associated to the wave equation with a nonlinear localized internal damping are shown. The result involves the existence of some auxiliary functions depending on the behavior of the damping near the origin. The existence of the solution of a nonlinear differential equation is also assumed.
