Let \(K\) be a finite or a local field of characteristic \(\neq 2\). The author gives an elementary proof for an extension of a result of \textit{J. W. Milnor} [Invent. Math. 8, 83--97 (1969; Zbl 0177.05204]): if two unitary operators of a quadratic space over \(K\) have the same irreducible minimal polynomial, then they are conjugate via a unitary operator.
