This book covers the theory of subdivision curves in detail, which is a prerequisite for that of subdivision surfaces. The way in which the limit curve relates to the polygon, and a lot of interesting properties of the limit curve, depend on the set of rules, and this book is about how one can deduce those properties from the set of rules, and how one can then use that understanding to construct rules which give the properties that one wants. The book consists of six parts. The first one provides the reader with useful background in mathematics. In the second part, the concepts for the reader who has not encountered subdivision curves and surfaces before are introduced. The third part presents ways to analyse properties of the limit curves in terms of rules. In part four, the description of how to invent a subdivision scheme which has some combination of desirable properties is given. In part five, some ideas about efficient implementation are described. Finally, there are some appendicies including some topics open for research, a short account of the development of the subject so far, and a bibliography of research papers. The book is presented in an accessible fashion, with very short chapters, easy to understand even for non-mathematicians. It should provide the reader with a full and deep understanding of the state of the art in subdivision analysis. The book will be of great interest to those starting to do research in CAD/CAE. It will also appeal to those lecturing in this subject, and industrial workers implementing these methods.
