Generalizing the notion of intersection body of a star body, an \textit{intersection body} in \({\mathbb R}^n\) has been defined as a star body whose radial function is the spherical Radon transform of an even (positive) measure. Using Koldobsky's Fourier analytic approach, the author shows that, for \(n\geq 5\), a direct sum \(A+B\) in \({\mathbb R}^n\) of convex bodies \(A,B\) with \(\dim A\geq 1\) and \(\dim B\geq 4\) cannot be an intersection body. For bodies of revolution, necessary criteria for intersection bodies are obtained in terms of differentiability properties of the radial function and in terms of convexity conditions.
