Consider a \(\sigma\)-finite measure space \((\Omega,\Sigma,\mu)\) and two Banach function spaces \(E\) and \(F\) over \(\mu\). The paper deals with the properties of the product space given by the pointwise product of functions belonging to each of them, giving conditions under which the product space is again a Banach function space. The space of multiplication operators between couples of Banach function spaces appears also in a natural way. In particular, the author shows how \(p\)-convexity and \(p\)-concavity properties of the spaces involved play a central role regarding the question of when the space of multiplication operators \(M(E,F)\) is nontrivial. Theorem 1.8 establishes that for non-atomic measures, if there are \(1 \leq p < q < \infty\) such that \(E\) is \(p\)-concave and \(F\) is \(q\)-convex, then \(M(E,F)=\{0\}\). This implies conditions for the normability of the product space \(E \cdot F\). Fundamental properties (completeness, normability, Fatou, etc.) of the products \(E \cdot F\) and the factor spaces \(E\) and \(F\) that define them are studied in Section 2, also in relation with the corresponding spaces of multiplication operators and the lattice interpolation of \(E\), \(F\) and \(L^p\)-spaces. Section 3 is devoted to factors of Banach function spaces. Again, \(p\)-convexity and \(p\)-concavity are crucial properties. For instance, it is shown in Theorem 3.3 that a Banach function space \(E\) with the Fatou property is \(p\)-convex with constant \(1\) if and only if it is perfect with respect to \(L^p\), i.e., in the notation of the paper, if \(M(M(E,L^p),L^p)=E\) (Theorem 3.3). An analogous result for order continuous spaces is given in Theorem 3.4, and a similar characterization for \(p\)-concavity is given in Theorem 3.9, that together with the previous results gives a nice characterization of when a space \(E\) is \(p\)-convex and \(q\)-concave in terms of the corresponding spaces of multiplication operators (Corollary 3.10). The paper finishes with some applications in the setting of classical inequalities for sequence spaces involving the \(\ell^p\)-norm.
