    Let \(\{ \phi_j \}^\infty_{j=0}\) be the usual dyadic resolution of unity in \(\mathbb R^n\). Let \(0<p,q \leq \infty\) and \(s \in\mathbb R\). Then \(B^s_{pq} (\mathbb R^n)\) is the collection of all \(f \in S' (\mathbb R^n)\) such that \[ \bigg( \sum^\infty_{j=0} 2^{jsq} \big\| \phi_j (D) f \, | L_p (\mathbb R^n) \big\|^q \bigg)^{1/q} \] is finite, where \(\phi_j (D)f = F^{-1} \big( \phi_j Ff)\). If one replaces \(\ell_q (L_p)\) by \(L_p (\ell_q)\), then one gets the corresponding spaces \(F^s_{pq} (\mathbb R^n)\). The question arises to which extent the basic Lebesgue spaces \(L_p (\mathbb R^n)\) can be replaced by other spaces. One recent candidate are the Morrey spaces \(L^\sigma_p (\mathbb R^n)\), \(0< p<\infty\), \(0 \leq \sigma \leq n/p\) in \(\mathbb R^n\), normed by \[ \| f \, | L^\sigma_p (\mathbb R^n) \| = \sup_{l \in N_0,\, k \in \mathbb Z^n} 2^{l( \frac{n}{p} - \sigma)} \bigg( \int_{Q_{lk}} |f(y)|^p \,dy \bigg)^{1/p}, \] where \(Q_{lk}\) are cubes, with left corner at \(2^{-l}k\) and side-length \(2^{-l}\). \(L^\sigma_p\) is somewhat between \(L_p\) and \(L_\infty\). Replacing \(L_p\) in \(B^s_{pq}\) and \(F^s_{pq}\) by \(L^\sigma_p\), one obtains corresponding Morrey smoothness spaces. This theory came up in the 1990s and accelerated in the last 5 years. Most remarkably, instead of replacing \(L_p\) by \(L^\sigma_p\) in the above smoothness spaces, one can stick at \(L_p\), combined with a truncation procedure. This gives the same Morrey smoothness spaces, denoted now by \(B^{s, \tau}_{pq} (\mathbb R^n)\) and \(F^{s,\tau}_{pq} (\mathbb R^n)\), with, roughly, \(n \tau = \frac{n}{p} - \sigma\), and normed by \[ \sup_{l \in N_0, k \in \mathbb Z^n} 2^{-ln\tau} \bigg( \sum^\infty_{j =l} 2^{jsq} \big\| \phi_j (D) f \, | L_p (Q_{lk} \big\|^q \bigg)^{1/q} \] for \(B^{s,\tau}_{pq}\) (similarly for \(F^{s,\tau}_{pq}\)). The present book develops the theory of the spaces \(B^{s,\tau}_{pq}\) and \(F^{s, \tau}_{pq}\) in \(\mathbb R^n\) largely parallel to the theory of the spaces \(B^s_{pq}\) and \(F^s_{pq}\), incorporating nearby other spaces such as BMO and some applications to pseudodifferential operators. This book may serve as a starting point for further research in this direction.
