There are two definitions of the integrated density of states (IDS) for a class of relativistic Schrödinger operators with magnetic fields and scalar potentials. One in [\textit{V. Iftimie, M. Măntoiu} and \textit{R. Purice}, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 43, No. 3, 585--623 (2007; Zbl 1165.35056)] uses the eigenvalue counting functions of operators induced on open bounded sets with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The other, introduced by the same authors in [\textit{C. P. Grünfeld} et al. Topics in applied mathematics and mathematical physics. Bucharest: Editura Academiei Române. (2008; Zbl 1154.00015)], involves the spectral projections of the operator defined on the entire space. In this paper, the authors show the equivalence of these two definitions that allows one to generalize the previous works of \textit{Shin-ichi Doi, A. Iwatsuka} and \textit{T. Mine} [Math. Z. 237, No.~2, 335--371 (2001; Zbl 0985.35055)] and \textit{V. Iftimie} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 41, No. 2, 307--327 (2005; Zbl 1089.35037)] for non-relativistic operators. They also prove the existence of the IDS when both magnetic field and the scalar potential are periodic.
