This gigantic and outstanding book summarizes the state of the art of black hole physics. In the author's words -- and this is also the opinion of the referee -- most aspects of black hole research are represented and discussed with sufficient depth that the reader will be able to consult more specialized texts and papers for more detailed information. The book is divided in three main parts: 1. Observations (130 pages); especially black holes in active galaxies, quasars, double stars and as endpoints of stellar evolution are described. Basic data on mean properties of the black hole zoo are collected. 2. Physics (240 pages); the structure of a completely isolated black hole in its different aspects is explained. Rotating and non rotating black holes, non static space time, relativistic magnetohydrodynamics and cosmic jets are the main emphasis. The mathematical presentation is didactically excellent. 3. Astrophysics (330 pages); the interaction of the black hole engine with its environment. The engine paradigma as central point of all questions is illuminated by four cornerstones: how engine blocks are built, the fuel and its carburation, the accretion, the exhaust systems. The chapters about the exhaust systems are a further highlight of the book. The different mechanisms are clearly explained and judged, namely the angular momentum transport, radiation, heat and matter loss, wind thermal exhaust and non thermal jet exhaust. The astrophysics is compressed in algebraic equations or in images that illustrate the manifold of connected physical processes. The last chapter (16., 100 pages) summarizes black hole engines of all sizes. This skillful last chapter is a further apex and imparts an overall view of the many aspects of black hole research. The book incorporates a list of 641 citations, a glossary for all abbreviations, an index of names and an detailed subject index. The book can be sincerely recommended for all astrophysical tutorials and to all students engaged in astrophysics.
