In the framework of smooth scattering theory, the authors consider a pair of selfadjoint operators and the spectral projections of these operators corresponding to the interval \((-\infty,\lambda)\). The study of the spectral properties of the difference \(D(\lambda)\) of these spectral projections is the main purpose of the paper. The absolutely continuous spectrum of the operator \(D(\lambda)\) is completely described in terms of the eigenvalues of the scattering matrix between the given operators. The singular continuous spectrum of the operator \(D(\lambda)\) is proved to be empty and its eigenvalues may accumulate only at ``thresholds'' in the absolutely continuous spectrum.
