Let \(X\) be a topological space. The author introduces the following indices: \(CG(X)\), the least cardinal \(\kappa\) such that there exists a family \(\{K_{\lambda}:\lambda<\kappa\}\) of compact subsets of \(X\) whose union is a dense subset of \(X\); \(\ell K(X)\), the least cardinal \(\kappa\) such that there exists a complete metric space \(M\) of weight \(\kappa\) and an usco map \(M\to 2^X\); \(\ell(X)\), the least cardinal \(\kappa\) such that any cover of \(X\) by open sets has a subcover with at most \(\kappa\) many sets. If \(X\) is a Banach space in its weak topology, the classes of weakly compactly generated (WCG), weakly \(\mathcal{K}\)-analytic and weakly Lindelöf spaces are equal to the classes of spaces \(X\) such that \(CG(X)=\omega\), \(\ell K(X)=\omega\) and \(\ell(X)=\omega\), respectively. The author studies the behavior of these indices. In particular, he proves that \(CG(X)\) may be arbitrarily larger than \(\ell(X)\); more exactly, he generalizes a well-known theorem on weakly Lindelöf determined spaces which are not WCG. The next two results depend on cardinals: \(\mathbf{d}(\kappa)\), the least cardinal \(\lambda\) such that \(\kappa^{\omega}\) is the union of \(\lambda\) many subsets, and \(\mathbf{b}_{\kappa}(\tau)\), \(\tau\leq \mathbf{d}(\kappa)\), the least cardinal \(\lambda\) such that \(\kappa\) is not contained in any union of less than \(\tau\) many compact subsets of \(\kappa^{\omega}\). Theorem 3. Let \(\kappa,\tau,\delta\) be infinite cardinals. The following are equivalent: (1) \(\tau\leq \mathbf{d}(\kappa)\) and \(\delta\geq \mathbf{b}_{\kappa}(\tau)\). (2) There exists a Banach space \(X\) and a subspace \(Y\) of \(X\) such that \(CG(X)=\kappa\), \(CG(Y)=\delta\) and \(\operatorname{dens}Y=\delta\). This theorem generalizes a well-known example of a non-WCG subspace of a WCG space due to Argyros. Theorem 4. Let \(\kappa,\tau,\delta\) be infinite cardinals. The following are equivalent: (1) \(\kappa\leq \tau\leq \mathbf{d}(\kappa)\) and \(\delta\geq \mathbf{b}_{\kappa}(\tau)\). (2) There exists a Banach space \(X\) such that \(\ell K(X)=\kappa\), \(CG(X)=\kappa\) and \(\operatorname{dens}X=\delta\). This is a modification of Talagrand's well-known example of a weakly \(\mathcal{K}\)-analytic space which is not WCG.
