A cubical \(d\)-sphere is called neighborly if it has the same \(\lfloor (d-1)/2\rfloor\)-skeleton as some cube. A cubical (convex) polytope is neighborly if the cubical sphere formed by its boundary is neighborly. In the paper, the neighborly cubical polytopes studied by Joswig and Ziegler (2000) are identified as special cases of the neighborly cubical spheres described by Babson, Billera, and Chan (1997). A non-polytopal neighborly cubical \(5\)-sphere (with 2048 vertices and 3584 facets) is constructed. Furthermore, it is proved that the neighborly cubical \(4\)-polytopes constructed by Joswig and Ziegler contain surfaces with \(n\) vertices and genus \(C\cdot n\log n\) (for some constant \(C\)).
