The author deals with the vortex equations that appear in bosonic theories for non linear \(\sigma\)-models under the form of Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfeld states. These equations have been studied by Taubes, Bradlow, García-Prada and Banfield. The author focuses on the \(\tau\)-Hermite-Einstein equations introduced by Álvarez-Cónsul and García-Prada for a holomorphic filtration \(\mathfrak{F}\) over a smooth projective manifold. He introduces a weaker notion of stability for holomorphic filtrations and relates it to certain Gieseker spaces using a geometric invariant theory construction. The main result is: Theorem. Let \(M\) be a smooth projective manifold. If \(\mathfrak{F}\) is an irreducible holomorphic filtration of a holomorphic vector bundle \(\mathcal{F}\) over \(M\) equipped with a metric \(h_{HE}\) solution of the \(\tau\)-Hermite-Einstein equation \(\sqrt{-1}\Lambda F_{h_{HE}}=\sum_i \overline{\tau}_i\pi^i_{h_{HE}}(\mathfrak{F})\), then there exists a sequence of balanced metrics \(h_k\) on \(\mathcal{F}\) which converges, up to conformal change, towards the metric \(h_{HE}\) in \(C^\infty\) topology.
