In the article under review the relationship between finitary and Artinian finitary groups is investigated. Let \(M\) be a module over a commutative ring \(R\). The finitary automorphism group of \(M\) over \(R\) is \[ F\Aut_RM=\{g\in\Aut_RM:M(g-1)\text{ is }R\text{-Noetherian}\} \] and the Artinian-finitary automorphism group of \(M\) over \(R\) is \[ F_1\Aut_RM=\{g\in\Aut_RM:M(g-1)\text{ is }R\text{-Artinian}\}. \] Although these two types of automorphism groups seem to be more or less identical, there exist close relationships between them. In particular, the following problem is considered: For each \(R\) and \(M\) as above does there exist a commutative ring \(S\) and an \(S\)-module \(L\) such that the group \(F_1\Aut_RM\) embeds into \(F\Aut_SL\)? In some preceding works, the author has shown that in general there exist no such \(S\) and \(L\). However, it was proved that such \(S\) and \(L\) exist in a number of special cases. In the present article, the author considers different aspects of this problem. The main results, contained in Theorems 1-6, state about the relationship between these types of groups. Beside this, a dual concept to the result that a subgroup \(G\) of \(F_1\Aut_RM\) is locally-normal finitary would be that \(G\) is residually finitary is also considered. The details of this fact are contained in Proposition 8.11.
