The book under review is the faithful translation into English of \textit{D. Perrin's} popular French text ``Géométrie algébrique. Une introduction.'', which was first published in 1995 and thoroughly reviewed shortly thereafter (Zbl 0842.14001). A new edition of this excellent textbook, again in French language, appeared in 2001 and was analyzed, once more and just as extensively, in our recent review (Zbl 1124.14001) a few months ago. As for both the precise contents and the truly outstanding didactic features of this first introduction to modern algebraic geopetry, which is developed from the author's repeated masters course given at the Université de Paris-Sud, Orsay, we may therefore refer to the two foregoing, independent, exhaustive and unanimously appraising reviews mentioned above. Finally, the earlier suggested and more than well-deserved translation into English of this masterly French standard text has become reality, which will be to the greatest benefit of the wide international community of students, teachers, and beginning researchers in the field of modern algebraic geometry. Also, we would like to emphasize again that this primer is perfectly suitable for a one-semester graduate course on the subject, and for profound self-study just as well.
