Given a Hilbert space \({\mathcal U}\) and denoting by \({\mathcal L}({\mathcal U})\) the space of bounded linear operators on \({\mathcal U}\), the authors introduce the notion of \(L^2\)-regular \({\mathcal L}({\mathcal U})\)-valued function as a weakly measurable function \(W:{\mathbb T}\to {\mathcal L}({\mathcal U})\) defined on the unit circle such that \(W^{-1}(\xi)\) exists for almost all \(\xi\in {\mathbb T}\), the multiplication operators \(M_W\) and \(M_{W^{-1}}\) defined by \(M_W(u)(\xi)= W(\xi)u\) and \(M_{W^{-1}}(u)(\xi)= W^{-1}(\xi)u\) map \({\mathcal U}\) into \(L^2_{\mathcal U}\), and the operator \( M_W P_{H^2_{\mathcal U}} M_{W^{-1}}\) extends to a bounded operator from \(L^2_{\mathcal U}({\mathbb T})\) into itself. Here, as usual, \(P_{H^2_{\mathcal U}}\) stands for the projection from \(L^2_{\mathcal U}\) to the Hardy space \(H^2_{\mathcal U}\). It is shown that these functions are the ones that are needed to get the dual shift-invariant pair of subspaces as Beurling-Lax representers. The authors prove that this class of functions describes the class of transfer functions for discrete-time dichotomous input-state-output linear systems with some stability properties. They apply this result to the particular case of \(J\)-inner matrix-valued functions to get a realization formula for the resolvent associated with a generalized Schur-Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem and also show that for \(J\)-inner functions, the \(L^2\)-regularity coincides with the notion of ``strongly regular J-inner'' in the sense of \textit{D. Arov} and \textit{H. Dym} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 29, No. 4, 373--454 (1997; Zbl 0902.30026)].
