An associative unital ring \(R\) is a generalized Laurent ring if there exists a family of additive subgroups \(U_n\), \(n\in\mathbb{Z}\), such that 1) \(U_{n+1}\subseteq U_n\), \(U_nU_k\subseteq U_{n+k}\); 2) there exist elements \(y\in U_1\), \(y^{-1}\in U_{-1}\) such that \(yy^{-1}=y^{-1}y=1\); 3) for a finite set of elements \(u_n\in U_n,\dots,u_{n+k}\in U_{n+k}\), \(k\geqslant 0\), there exists an element \(u\in U_n\) such that \(u-u_n-\cdots -u_{n+k}\in U_{n+k+1}\). If, in addition, the map \(U_0\to A=U_0/U_1\) splits then \(R\) is a Laurent ring with coefficient ring \(A\subseteq U_0\). The author considers basic properties of (generalized) Laurent rings \(R\), their connections to skew Laurent power series in several variables, existence of norms on \(R\). Most of the results are devoted to ring-theoretical properties that can be expanded from the coefficient ring \(A\) to the Laurent ring \(R\). For example, the properties of the Jacobson radical of \(R\) in terms of the radical of \(A\), the properties of \(R\) being a division ring, principal ideal ring, Bezout ring, Noetherian or Artinian ring, simple or semisimple ring, uniserial or serial rings, distributive semilocal ring, etc.
