    The Campanato spaces \({\mathcal L}^{p,\lambda}({\mathbb R}^n)\), for \(1\leq p<\infty\) and \(0\leq \lambda\leq n+p\), are given by all locally \(p\)-integrable functions such that \(\sup_B (\frac{1}{| B| ^{\lambda/n}}\int_B| u-m_Bu| ^pdx)^{1/p}<\infty\). The author also considers the local approximation Campanato spaces \({\mathcal L}^\alpha_p({\mathbb R}^n)\) for \(1\leq p<\infty\), \(\alpha\geq -\frac{n}{p}\) and \(N=\max(-1, [\alpha])\) given by locally \(p\)-integrable functions such that there exists \(M>0\) satisfying that for every cube \(B\) of side length \(\delta\), \((| B| ^{-1}\int_B | u(x)| ^pdx)^{1/p}\leq M\) if \(\delta\geq 1\) and there exists a polynomial \(P_B\) of degree \(\leq N\) (\(P_B=0\) if \(N=-1\)) with \((| B| ^{-1+\alpha p/n}\int_B | u(x)-P_B| ^pdx)^{1/p}\leq M\) if \(0<\delta\leq 1\). The aim of the paper is to characterize these spaces and their homogeneous counterparts in terms of Littlewood-Paley decompositions. This allows to recover the results for \(BMO\) and \(bmo\).
