If \(X\) is an abelian variety of dimension \(g\) and \(\hat X\) is its dual abelian variety, then the Fourier-Mukai transform is an isomorphism \(R\hat {\mathcal S}:D(X) \to D(\hat X )\) between the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on \(X\) and \(\hat X\) (which is defined in terms of the Poincaré line bundle on \(X\times \hat X\)). A coherent sheaf \(F\) on \(X\) is M-regular if the codimension of the support of \(R^i \hat {\mathcal S}(F)\) is grater than \(i\) for all \(i=1,\dots,g\). In this paper, the authors give a survey of M-regularity and its applications to the study of a variety of topics related to the geometry of abelian varieties.
