One of the most important problems in the theory of algebraic representations of lattices is to represent a finite lattice as a congruence lattice of a certain finite algebra. By a well-known result of \textit{P. P. Pálfy} and \textit{P. Pudlák} (see [ibid. 11, 22--27 (1980; Zbl 0386.06002]), this is equivalent to the problem of representing finite lattices as intervals in subgroup lattices of finite groups. The present remarkable paper deals with the case of algebraic lattices with at most countably many compact elements. Such a lattice is proved to be isomorphic to an interval in the subgroup lattice of a countable locally finite group (see Theorem 5.4). A similar result is obtained for finite lattices (see Theorem 5.3).
