The author gives a brief account of the deepest lattice-theoretic results obtained by G. Grätzer and E. T. Schmidt. The following famous theorems are cited, among others: 1) Congruence lattices of algebras are characterized as algebraic lattices (1962); 2) Every finite distributive lattice can be represented as the congruence lattice of a finite semimodular lattice (1998); 3) Complete congruence lattices of complete distributive lattices are charasterized as complete lattices (1995); 4) Every bounded at most uniquely complemented lattice has a \(\{0,1\}\)-embedding into a uniquely complemented lattice (1969). The list of publications of G. Grätzer and E. T. Schmidt supplemented to the paper under review contains over 300 items (Grätzer and Schmidt, Grätzer minus Schmidt, Schmidt minus Grätzer).
