For each element \(a\) of norm one in a \(JBW^*\)-triple \(A\), there exists a tripotent \(r(a)\) in \(A\) that can be characterized as the unit in the \(JBW^*\)-subtriple \(A(a)\) of \(A\) which is a commutative \(W^*\)-algebra, as the smallest tripotent \(u\) in \(A\) such that \(a\) is a positive element in the \(JBW^*\)-algebra \(A_2(u)\) which is the Peirce-two space corresponding to \(u\), or the weak\(^*\)-limit of the sequence \((a^{(2n+1)^{-1}})\) of elements of \(A\), where functions of \(a\) are defined by means of the functional calculus. In this paper, using properties of \(JBW^*\)-algebras, the author studies the family of tripotents that are range tripotents of elements of a \(JBW^*\)-triple \(A\), provides a direct characterization of when a given tripotent is a range tripotent, and reveals some properties of the set of range tripotents.
