Let \(L\) be a Hermitian line bundle over a flat torus \(M\). Assume that \(L\) is equipped with an auxiliary connection \(\nabla\) which is translation invariant. Suppose given a smooth function \(Q\) on \(M\). Let \(\text{Spec}(Q;L,\nabla)\) be the spectrum of the associated Schrödinger operator. The authors examine the extent to which this spectrum determines the potential \(Q\) up to gauge equivalence. The authors show that this need not be true: Theorem 1.1. Let \(M\) be a rectangular nonsquare 2-torus for which the ratio of the side lengths is rational. Then for every translation invariant connection \(\nabla\) on \(L\), there exist pairs of non-congruent potentials \(Q_1\) and \(Q_2\) which are real analytic and which are isospectral. On the other hand, the authors show that if the connection is invariant under the map \(x\rightarrow-x\) and if a certain genericity condition is satisfied, then in any dimensions, the spectrum determines the even part of the potential; in dimension 2 information is obtained about the odd part of the potential. In arbitrary dimensions, the collection \(\text{Spec}(Q;L,\nabla)\) as \(\nabla\) ranges over the translation invariant connections completely determines \(Q\) up to gauge equivalence. Section 1 contains introductory material. Line bundles over tori are treated in Section 2. Negative inverse spectral results on rectangular tori are given in Section 3 and positive inverse spectral results on tori are established in Section 4. There are 4 appendices: wave kernel on \(\mathbb R^n\), wave kernel acting on sections of a line bundle, expansion of the wave trace at singularities, and the proof of a technical proposition.
