The \textit{Ward} equation \[ \partial_t(J^{-1})\partial_t J)-\partial_x(J^{-1})\partial_x J-\partial_y(J^{-1}\partial_y J)-[J^{-1}\partial_t J,J^{-1}\partial_y J)]=0, \] for \(J:{\mathbb R}^{2,1}\to SU(n)\), is obtained from a dimension reduction and a gauge fixing of the self-dual Yang-Mills equation in the space-time with signature (2, 2). The author generalizes the results of \textit{J. Villarroel} [Stud. Appl. Math. 83, No. 3, 211--222 (1990; Zbl 0737.35055)], \textit{A. S. Fokas} and \textit{T. A. Ioannidou} [Commun. Appl. Anal. 5, No. 2, 235--246 (2001; Zbl 1084.35534)] and studies the inverse scattering problem for the Ward equation with non-small data and solves the Cauchy problem of the Ward equation with a non-small purely continuous scattering data.
