Krull-Schmidt theorem for small profinite groups
The paper under review establishes a profinite analogue of the Krull-Schmidt theorem for the class of small profinite groups, that is, profinite groups having only finitely many open normal subgroups of any given index. Indecomposability is understood in the profinite category, requiring all homomorphisms and decompositions to be continuous.\N\NThe main result, Theorem~2, shows that every small profinite group admits a decomposition as a direct product of non-trivial indecomposable profinite groups, indexed by a countable set and that such a decomposition is unique up to permutation and isomorphism of the factors. The paper concludes with a characterization of small profinite groups as precisely those profinite groups determined, up to isomorphism, by their finite continuous quotients.
