Large orbits of nilpotent subgroups of solvable linear groups

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) be a finite solvable group and let \(V\) be a finite faithful completely reducible \(G\)-module. The paper proves large-orbit bounds for nilpotent subgroups of \(G\) acting on \(V\). Its main result states that, if \(H\) is a nilpotent subgroup of \(G\), then there exists \(v\in V\) such that \(|C_H(v)|\leq (|H|/p)^{1/p}\), where \(p\) is the smallest prime divisor of \(|H|\).\N\NAs an application in the same linear-action setting, the paper bounds the nilpotent residual quotient. If \(M\) is the largest orbit size of \(G\) on \(V\), and \(G^{\mathcal N}\) is the nilpotent residual of \(G\), then \[p|G/G^{\mathcal N}|\leq M^{p/(p-1)},\] where \(p\) is the smallest prime divisor of \(|G/G^{\mathcal N}|\). Further consequences are given for nilpotent Hall subgroups and largest character degrees of finite solvable groups.
