Lavaurs algorithm for cubic symmetric polynomials

From MaRDI portal

Let \(P_d\) be the space of all polynomials of degree \(d \geq 2\) up to conjugacy, and let \(M_d\) be the space of polynomials of degree \(d\) with connected Julia set. It is a central question to understand the set \(M_d\). When \(d=2\), the set \(M_2\) is the celebrated Mandelbrot set.\N\N\textit{W. P. Thurston} [in: Complex dynamics. Families and friends. Wellesley, MA: A K Peters. 3--109 (2009; Zbl 1185.37111)]\N constructed the quadratic minor lamination (QML) on the unit circle \(S^1\) and showed that the quotient space \(S^1 / \mathrm{QML}\) is a monotone image of the boundary of \(M_2\). Conjecturally, this map is a homeomorphism, which provides a fully combinatorial description of the boundary of the Mandelbrot set.\N\NThis paper follows the same spirit and focuses on a subset of \(M_3\): the space \(M_{3,s}\) consisting of symmetric cubic polynomials \(P(z)=z^3+\lambda^2 z\) with connected Julia sets. In this paper, an analogous lamination \(C_sCL\) on \(S^1\), called the \emph{cubic symmetric comajor lamination}, is constructed and thoroughly investigated.\N\NNote that in a subsequent paper, the authors showed that the quotient space \(S^1 / C_sCL\) is also a monotone image of the boundary of \(M_{3,s}\).
