Liftable automorphisms of right-angled Artin groups

From MaRDI portal

This article studies liftable automorphisms of right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs) under regular covering maps of graphs. Given a regular covering map \(\varphi: \widetilde{\Gamma} \to \Gamma\), the authors consider the induced homomorphism \(\Phi: A_{\widetilde{\Gamma}} \to A_{\Gamma}\) between the associated RAAGs. They define two subgroups: \(L\mathrm{Aut}(\varphi) \leq \mathrm{Aut}(A_{\Gamma})\), consisting of automorphisms that admit lifts to \(\mathrm{Aut}(A_{\widetilde{\Gamma}})\) and \(F\mathrm{Aut}(\varphi) \leq \mathrm{Aut}(A_{\widetilde{\Gamma}})\), the group of such lifts, called fiber-preserving automorphisms.\N\NWhen \(\varphi\) is a regular covering without isolated vertices, the subgroup \(L\mathrm{Aut}(\varphi)\) is shown to be finitely generated by a subset of Laurence's elementary automorphisms: namely, those inversions, graph symmetries, transvections and partial conjugations that are liftable. Moreover, any liftable automorphism that sends each standard generator of \(A_{\Gamma}\) to a conjugate of itself is generated by liftable partial conjugations. The subgroup of \(F\mathrm{Aut}(\varphi)\) consisting of lifts of the identity automorphism of \(A_{\Gamma}\) is shown to be virtually contained in the Torelli subgroup \(IA(A_{\widetilde{\Gamma}})\), establishing an analogy with the Birman-Hilden theory for surface mapping class groups. In this context, the authors also prove a homological version of the corresponding exact sequence, involving the images under the abelianization homomorphisms.\N\NA detailed analysis is given of when a given elementary automorphism of \(\mathrm{Aut}(A_{\Gamma})\) is liftable. The article provides necessary and sufficient conditions for the liftability of transvections, partial conjugations and graph symmetries in terms of the structure of the covering graph. Several examples illustrate the interplay between the combinatorics of the covering and the liftability of automorphisms. The presence or absence of isolated vertices in the base graph plays a crucial role in determining the behavior of the lifts.
