Local and global suns
Properties of local and global suns and protosuns are studied. In particular, we investigate properties of the space and the set under which local solarity of the set implies its global solar properties. A point \(x\) from the unit sphere \(S \subset X\) is called a CLUR-point if the conditions \(y_n\in S\), \(\|x+y_n\|/2\to 1\), imply that \((y_n)\) has a converging subsequence. The class of \((\mathrm{CLUR})\) spaces is defined as follows: \(X\in (\mathrm{CLUR})\) if any point of the sphere \(S\) is a CLUR-point. It is shown that in CLUR-spaces a segmented Chebyshev local sun is a sun. In particular, a Chebyshev local sun composed of an at most countable family of convex existence sets is shown to be a sun. It is also verified that any strictly monotone path-connected existence set is a strict sun. Some of the results obtained are applied to revialing relations between solar, local solar, and Chebyshev properties of sets and properties of solutions of the eikonal equation. Results of this kind depend on the concept of a reflection caustics; in this regard, many illustrative examples from the real world are given.
