Local convergence problems for sequences of positive linear operators

From MaRDI portal

Consider a linear function subspace \(A\) on a topological Hausdorff space such that arbitrary sequences of positive linear operators locally converge on bounded locally continuous functions toward a given positive linear operator \(L\) or, in particular, toward the identity operator, provided the same convergence property holds for the functions in \(A\). Then \(A\) is called a local Korovkin subspace with respect to \(L\) or the identity operator, respectively. A special class of subsets \(S\) of continuous functions on a completely regular Hausdorff space is described, such that denoting by \(S^2\) the set of all the functions \(u^2\), \(u\) in \(S\), then the linear subspace generated by \({1}\cup S\cup S^2\) is a local Korovkin subspace for every weighted composition operator associated with a homeomorphic mapping and, in particular, for the identity operator. The main results were established by using order-theoretical methods based on upper and lower enveloping functions, first introduced in [\textit{H. Bauer}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 23, No. 4, 245--260 (1973; Zbl 0262.31005)], instead of the measure-theoretical tools employed in [\textit{F. Altomare}, Rev. R. Acad. Cienc. Exactas Fís. Nat., Ser. A Mat., RACSAM 118, No. 3, Paper No. 88, 17 p. (2024; Zbl 1542.41016)]. Consequently, the author succeeds in removing the restrictive hypothesis on the compactness of the underlying space. Bernstein-Schnabl operators have been mainly studied in the settings of convex compact subsets of locally convex spaces; see, e.g., [\textit{F. Altomare} et al., Markov operators, positive semigroups and approximation processes. Berlin: De Gruyter (2014; Zbl 1352.47001)] and the references therein. In the final section of this paper, some applications are presented concerning sequences of Bernstein-Schnabl operators acting on convex, not necessarily compact, Borel subsets of locally convex spaces together with some recent generalizations of them. In some particular cases, by means of such operators, a constructive Weierstrass-type density result for the above mentioned class of functions in terms of polynomials is obtained as well.
