Measures of specificity

From MaRDI portal

The concept of specificity [see e.g. \textit{R. R. Yager} (Zbl 0487.90007, Zbl 0521.94008, Zbl 0641.68154, Zbl 0703.94024, Zbl 0745.94027, Zbl 0783.94035)] plays a fundamental role in information engineering by providing a measure of the amount of information contained in a fuzzy subset or possibility distribution. Specificity plays a role in fuzzy set and possibility theory analogous to the role that entropy plays in probability theory. In this paper specificity is introduced and is shown to be a measure of the information contained in a fuzzy subset. A characterization of this measure is provided as well as a number of manifestations of the measure. The paper contains some definitions (measure of specificity, a stricter measure of specificity then \dots, a regular measure of specificity, a linear specificity measure, similarity relation) a theorem, examples, an application of specificity to validation of expert systems and last but not least 41 references. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0910.00051].
