Physics (00A79) Introductory exposition (textbooks, tutorial papers, etc.) pertaining to mechanics of deformable solids (74-01) Classical linear elasticity (74B05) Linear elasticity with initial stresses (74B10) Fracture and damage (74Rxx) Finite element methods applied to problems in solid mechanics (74S05)
This book is the outcome of the author's teaching of solid mechanics, structures and strength of materials at various universities. It is intended for degree and diploma courses in engineering and design where the principles of continuum mechanics, solid mechanics and structural analysis form the main part. Postgraduates specializing in these disciplines should also find this book useful. This second edition (for the first edition see [(2000; Zbl 0953.74001)]) includes new material and an extended exercise section for each of the fifteen chapters, as well as three appendices.NEWLINENEWLINEThe 15 chapters in the book are: 1. Stresses and strain transformations; 2. Plane elasticity theory; 3. Structures with symmetry; 4. Bending of beams and plates; 5. Theory of torsion; 6. Moment distribution; 7. Flexure and shear flow; 8. Energy methods; 9. Instability of columns and plates; 10. Finite elements; 11. Yield and strength criteria; 12. Plasticity and collapse; 13. Creep and visco-elasticity; 14. High and low cycle fatigue; 15. Fracture mechanics.NEWLINENEWLINEThe presentation is very good, and each chapter contains several elaborated examples. Every chapter is more or less self-contained and contains a large number of problems, but without solutions. The reviewer would prefer the answers to be provided; it would also be desirable to have a solution manual for instructors and teachers. The reviewer also missed a list of symbols.NEWLINENEWLINEIn any case, the book can be recommended to students and teachers of mechanical, civil and aeronautical engineering.
